It’s that time of year again; time for the annual office holiday party. This can be a very fun event for many companies and their employees.  However, it’s important to remember that you are still surrounded by your coworkers and manager. While it’s expected that the attitude of the evening will probably be a bit more laid back than usual, there should still be a certain amount of professionalism and respect showed to and from management. The following is a list of office holiday party etiquette tips to share with your staff.

Don’t assume the event is casual. If your company has a strict dress code policy Monday through Friday, they may still expect a particular dress code for company events. In addition, it’s imperative to find out if guests (such as spouses or kids) are welcome to the event before showing up.

Limit the libations. Play it safe and keep drinks to a minimum. Even if your office holiday party is just a small group getting together in a bowling alley or some other casual venue, it’s still a work function and you should behave professionally.

Don’t be all business. Acting professional does not mean discussing work. Parties are supposed to be fun and relaxing; an escape from the everyday tasks you complete while on the clock. Enjoy your coworkers company and stick to non-work related topics such as movies, sports, travel, etc.

These are just a few etiquette tips for your employees to keep in mind. Office parties are also a great way to casually network with colleagues that they may not see on a daily basis, but whom they would like to be connected to.  It’s vital that they realize that inappropriate behavior at the office holiday party could cause people to question their professionalism, and could even potentially hurt their job.
